It's 2007. I'm a 19 year old from Saskatchewan and I decide to go backpacking for three months across Mexico. On the bus to Mazunte, a southern beach town, I meet an Alaskan girl named Aija. We spend the week in towns along Mexico's southern shores having little cleansing and healing ceremonies under the stars and sleeping in hammocks outdoors. We head to Oaxaca, wish each other luck, say goodbye and part ways. She's off grid and doesn't have facebook or a way or communicating. We lose touch.
In 2012, six years later, I'm in Rishikesh, India doing a yoga teacher training. I've been meaning to write postcards to send home but haven't gotten around to it. One day, between classes, I head to the little art shop nearest to where I'm staying to pick up some supplies. While there I get fixated on this illustrated Shiva card where Shiva appears to have similar eyes to one of my best friends, Darion Alexandra. After a few minutes I purchase the card, and a few other goods and step out the door where I literally run into a person. It's Aija! We're both surprised to see one another and head to a cafe to catch up over tea.
She hasn't stopped travelling since we had last been in contact. She shares some experiences with me, like how she randomly became a participant in Lynx Vildens Prehistoric Project (http://www.lynxvilden.com/) and learned to live off the land using stone age practices among other experiences. The next day she plans to continue traveling around India so we say goodbyes and part ways. Again, she's off the grid so we don't stay in touch in traditional ways but perhaps our spirits stay in touch through the lifestyles we choose and waves our brains ride. I'm not sure what crossed our paths that day or what sort of synchronicity might cross our paths next but it sure does make you wonder.
